Students never apply alone. A verified teacher brings them in through a class invite, which is why “just sign up with my student email” does not work here.

Verification is email-domain-first. A recognized school domain grants instant access; otherwise you upload a license or school ID and Canva reviews within roughly 48 hours.

Why university students get nothing — and what Canva Campus is

This is the gap most articles paper over. Canva Education was built for K-12 classrooms, and the guidelines name colleges, universities, and their students among those who cannot join. Canva’s answer for higher ed is Canva Campus (formerly Canva for Campus): the university buys an enterprise-style license priced against its full-time student body size, and once the institution crosses its license threshold, every enrolled student receives a premium Canva account through it.

The practical consequence for an individual student: whether you get premium Canva for free depends entirely on whether your university signed a Campus deal. There is no self-serve application. If your campus has not bought in, your options are Canva’s free tier or paying Pro yourself.

What Canva Education includes vs Canva Pro

For teachers and K-12 students, Education is remarkably close to Pro:

Nearly everything in Pro: premium templates, Background Remover, Magic Studio AI tools, Brand Kits, premium photos, audio, video, and graphics libraries.
Extras Pro lacks: classroom features, Google Classroom and other LMS integrations, and assignment/commenting workflows built for teaching.
The real difference is the license, not the feature list. Education content is licensed for educational use — selling designs or doing paid client work on an Education account violates the terms.

So if your need is genuinely educational, Education beats Pro because it costs nothing. If you want commercial rights, you are a Pro customer.

That is a 4.5× spread between Nigeria and the US for the identical plan. Two honest caveats: Canva prices in local currency, so USD equivalents drift with exchange rates; and buying from outside your real country conflicts with Canva’s terms and payment-region checks, so treat the cheap end as context, not instructions.
