This is the one corner of subscription pricing where the discount is total rather than regional. You do not need a cheap country, a gift card, or a VPN. You need a school that a verification vendor recognises. Four big names hand students genuinely paid-tier products at zero cost, and each one checks enrollment before it pays up:

Tool What you get free How they verify The catch
GitHub Copilot Pro Full Pro tier while enrolled School email + enrollment proof via GitHub Education Annual renewal; 2026 move to usage-based AI credits
JetBrains IDEs Entire suite (IntelliJ IDEA Ultimate, PyCharm Pro, WebStorm, Rider…) Application with proof of status No commercial work, ever; annual renewal
Figma Professional-team features via Education plan SheerID check with school email One year, then reapply; view-only if it lapses
Notion Plus plan upgrade School email domain only (no document fallback) Single-member workspace; WHED-listed institutions

Paid AI seats are a different story. ChatGPT Plus cheapest verified USD is Philippines at $16.16 versus $19.99 in the US, dated 29 Aug 2026. GitHub Copilot Pro lists flat at $10 worldwide, which we verified from GitHub’s own plans page on 29 Aug 2026. Mixing those up is how students overpay for a chat app and forget the pack that would have covered the editor.

What each program actually gives you

GitHub Copilot Pro, free. Verified students get Copilot Pro through the Student Developer Pack, and so do teachers and open-source maintainers. In 2026 GitHub branded the student tier “Copilot Student”: unlimited code completions plus an allowance of AI credits, with limited chat and agent usage. That matters because on 1 June 2026 GitHub moved paid Copilot plans onto usage-based AI credits, and the student grant tracks the new structure. Treat blog posts from last year as expired. The pack also bundles partner offers — cloud credits, domains, Notion’s upgraded plan — but partners join and leave constantly, so screenshot-a-2024-blog coupon hunting wastes your time.

Copilot in the pack is not GitHub’s public free tier, and it is not Microsoft 365 Copilot sold into enterprises. It rides on the student grant. When the grant lapses, the editor falls back to whatever you pay for, or to nothing.

JetBrains educational licence. A free licence covering the whole IDE suite for verified students and teachers, renewed annually — JetBrains emails a reminder two weeks before it expires (checked their licensing FAQ, Aug 2026). The important clause is scope: educational licences exclude commercial work explicitly, including part-time jobs and internships, and JetBrains says freelance work needs a personal subscription. If you freelance, read the current education terms before you ship a paid project from IntelliJ. The consolation prize after graduation is a 40 percent discount on a personal licence for two years.

Figma Education. Higher-ed students apply with a school email, pass a SheerID check, and get Professional-plan features free for one year (Figma Help Center, Aug 2026). Bootcamp students get six months. K-12 users get Enterprise-level access through their district but lose the AI tools and Figma Make. If verification lapses mid-project, your education teams drop to view-only — annoying right before a portfolio deadline, so reapply early.

Notion. Still free for students as of Aug 2026: accredited college students and teachers upgrade to the Plus plan at no cost, verified purely by school email against Notion’s institution database. There is no document fallback — no student ID uploads, so if your domain is not listed you petition them by email. GitHub Pack members can claim an Education Plus variant with extra AI responses instead.

Azure for Students and Google Cloud student credits follow the same enrollment pattern. They are not country-priced App Store listings. ExpressVPN Egypt monthly at $4.96 (29 Aug 2026) will not grant you a JetBrains licence. Different merchant entirely. You apply, they verify, they expire.

The pattern behind all of them

  1. A verification vendor checks real enrollment, not your Gmail alias on a university domain you still have from 2019.
  2. Access renews per academic year, and lapsed verification ends it silently.
  3. Commercial use is either excluded (JetBrains) or separately licensed.
  4. None of them are country-priced, so the arbitrage questions this site usually answers do not apply here. Free is free in every currency.

Student developer tooling is the highest-value discount in this whole category and the one people forget to claim, because nobody runs ads for a licence that costs nothing.

Apply in the first month of term, not during finals, because document review queues exist. Keep a dated enrollment PDF. The same document rules as music student plans apply: name, school, current term. How to verify student status for Spotify is a useful dry run even if you never want Premium Student. If a pack partner asks you to create a new account, put the school email on that account too. Mixing a personal Gmail mid-flow is how grants attach to the wrong login.

What you will pay the day you graduate

The cliff is real, and it hits different tools differently:

  • Copilot: back to the public list — flat $10/month wherever you live (our Copilot table), about $120 a year you did not budget for.
  • JetBrains: free Community editions remain, but Ultimate and the rest revert unless you buy personal — with the 40 percent graduate discount softening year one.
  • Figma: view-only on education teams until you move files to a Starter team or subscribe.
  • Notion: drops to the Free plan; your pages stay, some Plus features do not.

Graduation is a calendar event. Export settings, push private repos you care about, and screenshot licence portals the week before the email says you are no longer a student. The code you wrote remains yours. The seat does not. If a partner credit still has unused balance, spend or export it before the pack expires — unused credits rarely convert to cash.

For context on what the paid world looks like once the grant ends: the only verified country tables on this site today cover ChatGPT Plus, Claude, and neighbours on cheapest AI subscriptions. Adobe Creative Cloud is the paid creative-suite alternative with a first-year student intro that rises later — claim JetBrains and the GitHub pack first, then decide whether Adobe’s second year is worth it: Adobe Creative Cloud student discount.

Non-developer student plans follow the same verification pattern, with actual money still unpriced for music: Spotify, YouTube Premium, Apple Music. YouTube Individual country rows are live (Nigeria $1.63 vs US $20.99, 29 Aug 2026) if you would rather pay than verify.

How we date paid rows when they exist: methodology.
