But the honest answer is messier, because Telegram sells you an official discount that has nothing to do with where you live — while Discord’s cheap countries are nearly impossible for outsiders to actually pay for.

Nitro makes Discord nicer: bigger upload limits, HD streams, custom profile, two server boosts. Different apps, different perks, different terms of service. Why the cheapest countries flip the result

Discord uses localized pricing in about 17 markets — Brazil, Vietnam, the Philippines, Nigeria, Egypt and others pay far less than Americans (per Discord’s own localized pricing page, accessed Aug 2026). Nigeria’s ₦3,900 works out to $2.88, roughly a third of the US price.

Telegram prices Premium mostly through Apple’s App Store, where country tiers still vary widely but less brutally: Indonesia’s Rp59,000 is $3.31, about a third off the US $4.99.

So the gap between the two winners is only 43 cents. That is smaller than most people expect when they search this comparison — and it ignores payment friction entirely.

Telegram’s own FAQ states that subscribing through @PremiumBot costs less than the App Store or Google Play because those purchases avoid Apple’s and Google’s fees (telegram.org/faq_premium, accessed Aug 2026). Fragment, Telegram’s crypto marketplace, sells prepaid Premium for TON at prices typically under the in-app rate (vendor guides and community reports, Aug 2026). Translation: any Telegram user anywhere can get an official-ish discount without touching a VPN or a foreign card.

Discord offers none of that. Its web checkout takes cards (and PayPal in many countries, per community reports), but the localized cheap tiers require a payment method matching the region. And Discord’s help page confirms that Nitro gifts do not inherit localized pricing — someone in Nigeria cannot buy you a cut-price gift link. Third-party resellers selling cheap “Nitro tokens” exist; Discord does not sanction them, and stolen-card sourcing is common in that grey market. Treat those as risk, not savings.

Will a VPN alone get you the cheaper price?

No. A VPN changes your IP, not your billing address. Both services price off the store account’s country, so you would need a foreign App Store ID (Telegram) or a matching foreign card (Discord) on top of the tunnel. For Telegram you likely should not bother — the bot route is legal, official, and discounted.
