The short version, checked August 2026: Apple Music Student costs about half the standard individual rate in whatever country your Apple Account is set to, and the discount is unlocked by UNiDAYS verifying your enrollment — not by any coupon code. In the US that worked out to $6.99/month after Apple raised it from $5.99 in July 2026 (Deadline, Jul 2026).

But here is the twist almost nobody covers: the student plan is not always the cheapest way to be a student. Our verified table shows India’s ordinary individual plan at ₹139 = $1.45 (29 Aug 2026, apple.com/in). That single regular subscription undercuts the student price in the US ($6.99), Germany (€5.99 tier), and the UK many times over. If you legitimately hold an Indian Apple ID, you do not need a student discount at all.

How the UNiDAYS check actually works

Apple’s support pages describe the flow plainly (support.apple.com/106008, accessed Aug 2026):

  • You subscribe inside the Apple Music app on an Apple Account set to a supported country. Verification goes through UNiDAYS in most markets — a few use SheerID instead.
  • UNiDAYS matches you against enrollment records from partner institutions. A .edu email alone proves nothing; expect a school-email pass first, then a document request if that fails.
  • The discount lasts a maximum of 48 months. Miss a re-verification window and the plan silently converts to the standard individual rate on your next bill.
  • The student plan is individual-only. It cannot become a Family Sharing plan while staying at the student rate.

Two failure modes dominate. First, documents: name, school, and a current term date must all be readable — do not crop the year off a tuition invoice. Second, geography: if your school is a UNiDAYS partner only in Germany but your Apple Account is set to the US, you are applying in the wrong storefront entirely. That is not a broken form; it is a country mismatch.

When the normal plan beats the student plan

This is the table worth studying. Left side: real individual prices we verified on 29 Aug 2026 from Apple’s own storefronts. Right side: what students pay in expensive markets. The inversion is stark.

Storefront Plan Local price USD (29 Aug 2026) Beats US Student ($6.99)?
India Individual ₹139 $1.45 Yes — by $5.54
Turkey Individual ₺89.99 $1.88 Yes
Philippines Individual ₱169 $2.73 Yes
Indonesia Individual Rp59,000 $3.31 Yes
Brazil Individual R$23.90 $4.59 Yes
Japan Individual ¥1,180 $7.42 No
United States Individual $11.99 $11.99
United Kingdom Individual £11.99 $16.25

Five storefronts’ regular plans cost less than America’s student plan. A student in Manila paying the standard ₱169 is better off than a student in New York paying the discounted $6.99. Regional pricing simply swamps the 50%-off student mechanic. All rows carry dates and sources on the Apple Music prices by country money page.

Note the UK row too: £11.99 = $16.25, about 35% above the US. British students genuinely need the student rate; Indian ones arguably do not.

Paying from the right storefront

The whole thing rides on your Apple Account country, and a VPN cannot change it. The country setting moves only through Apple’s own process, which requires spending down store credit to zero and ending conflicting subscriptions first. A leftover $0.43 balance blocks the move until it is gone.

Once your account matches your target storefront:

  • A local card works everywhere we verified, and Apple Pay is accepted on these rails (India supports UPI and net-banking style methods through its App Store payment options).
  • Apple gift cards in the matching storefront can pay for Apple Music, including the student plan — Music is an Apple product billed to your Apple ID. That is the opposite of third-party apps like ChatGPT Plus, where store credit gets refused. See how to avoid the Apple tax for that contrast.
  • Confirm the discounted line appears on the Music subscribe screen after UNiDAYS clears, not in some third-party reseller app.

If you are weighing a country change just to reach the India ₹139 row, be honest about the friction: you need an Indian payment method that Apple accepts, and Apple periodically re-checks accounts. How it compares to other student plans

Service Verifier Discount transfers in? Our coverage
Apple Music UNiDAYS (SheerID in a few markets) n/a This page
Spotify SheerID No Spotify student guide
YouTube Premium SheerID No YouTube student guide

A pass on one database means nothing to the others. Verified with SheerID for YouTube? Start fresh with UNiDAYS for Apple. Each vendor keeps its own enrollment records, and none share them.

One more ceiling people forget: even a perfect UNiDAYS verification dies at 48 months — four academic years plus a bit. PhD students outlast the discount. At that point the cheapest legitimate option may be exactly what this page opened with: pick the storefront where the standard plan is already cheap.
