VPNs run the deepest first-term discounts in consumer software, which is why every affiliate site in the category publishes its Black Friday page in September. We are publishing the structure now — what the deals actually look like, checked on the vendors’ own websites in August 2026 — and the Friday digits when they exist on a dated checkout. Inventing a “$1.99/mo” figure in August is how this niche lost trust.
One thing to get out of the way immediately: a Black Friday VPN price applies to the first term only. Buy a two-year plan in November and you pay the promotional total once. When it lapses, you are billed at the standard rate, and that rate is often 40% to 60% higher per year than what you just paid. The whole trick of shopping this category well is comparing totals across the period you will actually stay subscribed.
What the three big deals looked like, checked August 2026

Three honest readings of that table:
- ExpressVPN’s renewal is the least punishing. Its Advanced and Pro tiers renew cheaper relative to their intro pricing than the entry plan does, which is unusual in this category — most vendors make the gap worst on the cheapest plan.
- Surfshark’s headline rate is the lowest, and it is also the vendor most likely to market a November figure as “lowest ever.” Check it against its own past banners before believing the superlative.
- NordVPN’s discount attaches to the base plan. Bundled extras (threat protection tiers, storage seats) are how the checkout page makes the offer look bigger than the arithmetic says it is.
Website rates move during campaigns, so treat these as the August 2026 baseline, not gospel for November. What does not change is the shape: deep intro, higher renewal.
Why the discounts are so large
A VPN subscription costs the vendor little to serve, lifetime value sits in renewals, and the category is crowded enough that acquiring a customer is priced close to zero. The first term is sold near cost. The standard renewal rate does the earning.
That is not a scandal. It is a fine deal if you treat the term as the product and decide again at the end. It is a bad deal if you believe the countdown timer and never put the renewal date in your calendar.

These are not Black Friday prices either. They are Apple catalog in-app prices we verified in August 2026. They matter because they are the floor a November banner has to beat in total cash — if a two-year website deal costs more than the app-store route you can actually pay, the banner is theatre.

Two things worth staring at:
- NordVPN’s Turkey 12-month in-app total ($9.60) is absurdly below everything else — including NordVPN’s own US monthly times twelve ($167.88). It exists because Apple storefronts price regionally and the Turkish lira has moved. Catch: it requires a Turkish Apple ID and a payment method that storefront accepts, which most readers cannot arrange. We leave the tension visible rather than picking a winner for an affiliate cookie.
- ExpressVPN’s year in-app barely discounts anywhere — even the cheapest storefront we track (Egypt) pays $78.38 against the US $99.99. If a November banner claims “70% off,” ask seventy percent off which list. Against an inflated regular monthly, the math is decoration.
Per-vendor renewal behaviour
All three raise the rate at website renewal; the details differ and each has its own page: NordVPN, Surfshark, ExpressVPN. The pattern to internalize: Surfshark sells the lowest intro and renews around the same ballpark it charged, NordVPN’s jump from ~$94 intro to $139/year is the steepest in dollar terms, and ExpressVPN’s entry plan renews highest while its premium tiers soften.
Bonus months and bundled extras in a campaign die with the first term. They do not lower renewal. And the 30-day money-back window restarts at each renewal charge, not at your original signup — which is the single most useful fact on this page if you ever get caught by a surprise invoice.
Put the renewal date in your calendar before you close the tab. A 24-month deal is only cheap if you remember it exists in month 24.
Buy on the website, not in the app store
If you want a Black Friday price at all, buy it on the vendor’s website. Apple in-app subscriptions almost never get campaign pricing — the App Store tables above are the year-round catalog, full stop. Buying in-app also means Apple bills you, renewal runs through your Apple ID settings, and refunds follow Apple’s policy rather than the vendor’s 30-day promise.
The website checkout takes cards essentially everywhere, PayPal in most regions, and sometimes crypto. Crypto is the one method we would skip during a promo: it is effectively non-refundable, which cancels the safety net that makes trying a VPN cheap.
One thing a Black Friday VPN will not buy you
Cheaper streaming or AI subscriptions. The VPN changes which pages load; the payment method’s country decides what you are billed. ChatGPT Plus is $19.99 in the US and $16.16 in the Philippines (29 Aug 2026). No VPN gets you that figure without that storefront’s payment path. Gift cards still do not pay for Plus. YouTube Premium Individual is $1.63 in Nigeria versus $20.99 in the US on the same date. Netflix Standard is $2.89 in Pakistan versus $19.99 in the US. Spotify country cells are still blank on this site.
