Two invoices get sold as one “monthly price.” The trap is not a scam run on you personally — it is structural. Introductory pricing applies to the first term only, and every major VPN vendor builds its headline number on that assumption.

Website long-term VPN plans advertise a low monthly-equivalent across a 12-, 24-, or 27-month prepaid term, then renew at the standard rate. The cheap number is the intro. The expensive number is what keeps billing if you do nothing.

App Store monthly plans are what our live tables verify. They bill at the storefront list price every month. They are not the website banner, and mixing the two is how people think they are paying one thing while being charged another.

Why the intro price vanishes after term one

The advertised figure is a division: total prepaid cash divided by months in the intro. It looks like a subscription price. It is a bundle with a sequel priced separately.

On the sequel:

  • Auto-renew is on by default.
  • The renewal rate can be monthly, annual, or another multi-year term entirely. Read the checkout form — it must show the post-intro price.
  • Reminder emails exist but land in promotions folders. Calendar the end of your intro the same day you pay.
  • If the form never states what happens after the intro, you do not have a price. You have an advertisement.

Real renewal jumps, with sources

Website-side numbers, checked August 2026 against vendor pages and Tom’s Guide’s renewal-prices investigation:

Vendor & tier Intro (first term) Renewal Jump
NordVPN Basic $94 for 27 months ($3.49/mo) ~$139/year ~48% more per year
Surfshark Starter $67 for 27+ months ($2.49/mo) ~$79/year, or the ~$15.45/mo standard monthly ~106% over the 1-year intro
ExpressVPN ~$84 for the first 28 months ~$100/year ~19% more per year

Escape hatches that actually work

Prepaid without auto-renew. Some services sell fixed-length prepaid codes or plans that simply expire. YouTube Premium, for example, sells prepaid terms of up to 24 months with no auto-renew attached — the cleanest possible exit from this whole article. Before subscribing to anything recurring, check whether a prepaid variant exists.

Turn off auto-renew immediately. You keep your paid time; you just stop the sequel invoice. This is strictly better than remembering later.

Calendar the expiry date, minus a week. The single highest-return thirty seconds in personal finance.

Cancel-and-resubscribe math. Because promos recur, letting a subscription lapse and signing up fresh often beats the renewal rate. Worked example with our verified rows: NordVPN’s US 12-month App Store row is $83.99 (29 Aug 2026) versus a website renewal near $139 — a gap of about $55 per year for the identical core product. Even accounting for one month of lapse coverage, resubscribing wins. Vendors know this; Surfshark explicitly allows stacking a new promo plan before expiry, which is the same move without the gap.

Screenshot the line that says what happens after the intro. If that line is missing, you do not have a price. You have an advertisement.

Where each kind of subscription actually hides

Three separate cancellation surfaces, and people routinely check the wrong one:

  • Apple subscriptions live in iOS Settings under your Apple ID, not inside the vendor app. Deleting the app cancels nothing.
  • Google Play subscriptions live in Play payments. Same rule.
  • Website plans live in the vendor’s account portal.

Check all three if you have ever tapped Subscribe on a phone. People cancel the app and keep paying Apple for months. Our verified NordVPN Turkey monthly row (₺399.99 / $8.34, 29 Aug 2026, versus US $13.99) keeps billing that storefront until you cancel the Apple subscription itself.

What regulators are doing about it — August 2026

The famous federal fix is currently in limbo. The FTC’s Click-to-Cancel Rule was vacated by the Eighth Circuit in July 2025 on procedural grounds. The FTC restarted the process with a new Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking in March 2026 (public comments closed April 13, 2026), but a final rule is likely years away (Gibson Dunn and Kirkland & Ellis client alerts, accessed Aug 2026).

That does not mean nothing applies. The Restore Online Shoppers’ Confidence Act (ROSCA) still requires clear disclosure of material terms before charging and a simple way to stop recurring charges, and the FTC keeps enforcing it — including a settlement with Amazon over Prime cancellation flows. Around 30 US states have their own auto-renewal laws; California’s requires businesses to send an annual reminder disclosing the upcoming renewal price. So: the discount-first, disclosure-later pattern is legally contested everywhere, even while the headline federal rule waits.

Refunds after a surprise renewal are possible but time-boxed, and they come from whoever charged you: how to get a refund when regional pricing fails.

The bottom line

Treat every intro price as a finite coupon with your card number attached. Read the renewal line before paying, kill auto-renew on day one, calendar the expiry, and compare the renewal quote against a fresh signup before you let it bill. Boring beats arguing with a $139 invoice you thought was $94.
