Regional pricing fails in three ordinary ways: the payment goes through and the amount is not what you expected, the subscription starts fine and the service later blocks it, or the credit you loaded cannot be spent. Each failure has a different owner, and only the first is sometimes easy to unwind.

The rule that decides everything: refunds follow the purchase storefront. Whoever’s name is on the bank line is the only party that can give the money back. YouTube Individual in Nigeria is ₦2200 / $1.63 and ChatGPT Plus in the US is $19.99, both dated 29 Aug 2026 — neither fact helps if you prepaid twelve months on the wrong rail.

Who owes you the money

Read the receipt, not the app icon.

You bought via Refund route Realistic odds
Apple App Store reportaproblem.apple.com request form Discretionary. First-time, specific, same-day requests do best; forgotten renewals are refused more often than granted
Google Play Order history → Report a problem, then developer Good within 48 hours (auto-decision in 1–4 days). After that, developer policy applies
Vendor website (chatgpt.com, surfshark.com…) That vendor’s billing support Their own policy; money-back guarantees are the strongest lever
Prepaid or e-money card Issuer support Unloading a balance is almost always refused
Gift card, after redeeming Nowhere useful Final

ChatGPT Plus paid in the iOS app is an Apple problem. Plus paid at chatgpt.com is an OpenAI problem. YouTube Premium paid in the iPhone app is Apple; paid on youtube.com, it is Google. Mixing those rails is how people open a ticket with a company that never saw the money.

Our ChatGPT, YouTube, Netflix, Microsoft 365, and VPN country tables are App Store IAP rows. Subscribed that way? Start at Apple. Used Play credit? Start at Google. Note that Apple’s process has no fixed deadline published — it reviews case by case, replies to requests within 24–48 hours, and takes up to 30 days to return card funds once approved (Apple Support, May 2026). Google is the opposite shape: a hard 48-hour self-service window, then hand-off to the developer (Google Play Help, checked Aug 2026).

Order of operations

  1. Cancel the renewal first. This is not the refund. It stops the next charge while you argue about this one. VPN website plans are where people miss this: the cheap term ends and the higher rate bills automatically. See the auto-renewal trap.
  2. Collect evidence before writing. Checkout screenshot, receipt, currency shown, date, last four of the card. A dated screenshot of TRY where you expected USD is a claim. “It did not work” is not.
  3. Make one specific claim. Wrong currency, duplicate charge, or never received access. Do not narrate a five-country VPN saga in the first sentence if you want a human to grant a first-time Apple refund.
  4. Chargeback last. Banks often side with you on a genuine unauthorized charge. They also often trigger Apple or Google locking the account that still holds your photos, Play balance, or family purchases. On Google Play, report truly unauthorized charges through Google’s own 120-day lane before touching the bank.

If the sheet showed the wrong country’s price on an account that was supposed to be your home market, say that. Billing-country mismatch is the one case support can treat as their error. If the sheet showed Pakistan Netflix Standard at ₨800 / $2.89 and you intended to buy that, then later lost the household to a location check, that is a terms outcome, not a mischarge.

Failure mode 1: dead codes and stranded balances

Dead reseller codes are the most common outright loss in regional pricing. You buy a code from a marketplace, redeem fails or the balance was already drained, and the marketplace points at the issuer while the issuer points at the retailer. Prevention beats recovery here: buy direct from the brand or a major retailer, redeem within minutes of buying, and screenshot the redemption error with the code visible.

Redeemed store credit is a separate trap: Netflix gift-code balances cannot be refunded or moved to another country’s account, and every store we checked treats redeemed balance as final. Load one month, not a year. Payment geography: best gift cards for foreign subscriptions and how to pay.

Failure mode 2: FX and mischarge disputes

The strongest refund claims are arithmetic ones. A checkout that displayed one amount and billed another, a currency conversion fee presented as part of the price, a duplicate line on the same day — support can verify these against their own records and grant without precedent. Write the claim with three numbers: what was shown, what was charged, and the difference. A dispute about whether the service should allow your region is weaker; a dispute about what the screen said is strong.

Failure mode 3: renewal surprises

The classic loss is not a failed payment — it is a successful one you did not expect. Cheap intro terms ending, annual renewals on plans you thought were monthly, and guarantee windows that closed last week. Two defenses: a calendar reminder two days before any trial or term ends, and knowing the guarantee terms up front. Some vendors are explicit about renewals — Surfshark’s 30-day money-back guarantee covers renewal charges too (Surfshark help center, checked Aug 2026) — but many restrict it to the first term. In the US, the FTC’s click-to-cancel rule was vacated by a court in July 2025 and the agency relaunched the rulemaking in March 2026, so there is currently no federal one-click cancellation requirement to fall back on. Cancellation friction is real; plan around it.

The refund you actually get is the one you structured not to need: one month, one rail, screenshot before confirm.

If you already paid Apple for a subscription you meant to buy on the web, cancel, wait out the period, then resubscribe on the vendor site. Running both double-bills and splits the refund across two companies. And keep the first month small on any foreign store credit — Nigeria YouTube Individual is $1.63 a month, not $20 of stranded Play balance. A declined first charge from the bank is often cheaper than a successful charge you then have to unwind.
