How long does Spotify student verification take?

The automatic check is instant when it matches. If SheerID needs to review documents or confirm enrolment by email, Spotify says it can take several days. You will get the result by email either way.

What documents does Spotify accept?

A school-issued document showing your first name, last name, institution name, and an issue date from the current term or within the last three months. Enrolment letters, class schedules, registration receipts, and transcripts of classes in progress all work. Acceptance letters are rejected. You get up to three document attempts.

Why is my university not on the list?

SheerID only recognises institutions it has in its database for the country you selected. If yours is missing, Spotify says you are not eligible right now. You can ask SheerID to add your school; it reviews requests within about 30 days. If your whole country is missing from the list, schools cannot be added at all.

What happens if I forget to re-verify?

Your plan silently moves to full-price Premium on the next invoice. Nothing breaks otherwise. You can still renew manually from your account page after the discount lapses, and once re-verified the discounted price returns from the next payment.

Does my student email need to be on the Spotify account?

No. Spotify says explicitly that you do not need your institutional email registered to qualify. Verification checks current enrolment records, not what address the account uses.

Can I pay for Premium Student with phone credit?

No. Spotify blocks mobile and carrier billing on the student plan. If you currently pay that way, you have to cancel and sign up again with a card or another payment method offered in your location's sign-up flow.

How to verify student status for Spotify

Student pricing is the biggest legitimate discount on any music subscription, and the one people abandon fastest, because the verification step fails quietly and the retry path is buried in two different companies’ help docs. Spotify does not verify anything itself. It hands you to SheerID, and most failures are fixable if you know which of the two to blame. This walkthrough covers the actual flow, the four things your upload must show, and the renewal clock people miss. None of this produces an invented cheaper rate: the amount shows at checkout in your account’s country, and we have published no verified student price in any currency.

The verification flow, step by step

This is Spotify’s documented process (support.spotify.com, Premium Student article, checked August 2026):

Fill out the SheerID form at spotify.com/student/verification. You give your name, date of birth, and pick your institution from a dropdown. If your school is not listed, you are not eligible right now — there is no workaround on this form (more below).
Prove enrolment. SheerID either matches you automatically against enrolment data, asks you to log into your university portal, or asks for a document upload.
Wait for the email. The automatic match is instant. Document review takes several days, and the confirmation arrives by email from SheerID, not Spotify.
Apply the discount. Only after the confirmation email do you go back to Spotify and subscribe to Premium Student on your account. People who subscribed first often think verification failed because they were looking in the wrong place.

One tip straight from Spotify’s troubleshooting page: run the form in an incognito window. Saved autofill data pre-filling old names or addresses is a known cause of automatic-match failures.

When your school is not in the list

This is the hard failure, common outside the US, UK, and a handful of large markets. Per Spotify’s support article on unlisted universities:

If the institution is not in SheerID’s list for your country, you are not eligible at this time. Spotify cannot influence this.
You can request that SheerID add your college or university. SheerID reviews within roughly 30 days and emails you if it gets added.
If your country is not in the list at all, institutions cannot be added — the request path does not exist for you.

Do not try to game the dropdown by picking a school in another country. A Turkish applicant selecting a Dutch university stacks two mismatches, and the enrolment record will not corroborate it. International students: verify against the institution’s country even if tuition is billed abroad. SheerID is not a visa check, but it is also not a pay-from-anywhere check.

Passing the document review

If the automatic match fails, SheerID emails an upload link. Spotify’s requirements are specific, so meet all four in one image:

Accepted: enrolment letter, class schedule for the current term, registration or tuition receipt, transcript showing classes in progress. Rejected: acceptance or offer letters (explicitly), undated student ID cards, anything in someone else’s name.

Three mechanical limits almost nobody mentions before hitting them:

The upload link expires after 7 days. If it dies, restart the verification form rather than hunting for a resend button — there isn’t one.
You get a maximum of 3 document submissions. Burn them on different document types (receipt plus schedule), not two photos of the same card.
Spotify cannot unblock you at the limit; only SheerID support can.

The reason verification fails is rarely that you are not a student. It is that the document has no date on it, or the name does not match the account.

The renewal clock: 12 months, 4 years

Two timers run at once, and only one has a warning light.

Every 12 months you must re-verify through SheerID again. About 4 weeks before expiry, Spotify emails renewal instructions. Check spam — if the email slips past and the 12 months lapse, your next invoice is full price, with no proration and no warning at checkout.
4 years total, counting from first subscription. After that the student rate ends regardless of enrolment.

Missed it anyway? Not fatal. You can renew manually from your account page even after expiry; once re-verified, resubscribe to Premium Student and the discount applies from the next payment. Set your own calendar reminder anyway, because relying on one email a year is exactly how people end up reading the auto-renewal trap. Verification is not billing

Passing SheerID proves enrolment. It does nothing to your payment setup. Two separate traps:

Payment methods. Spotify explicitly excludes mobile/carrier billing on Premium Student. Cards and whatever else appears in your location’s sign-up flow are fine. What this page will not price

We have verified no Spotify student row in any currency, so none appears here — the student tier is not exposed in the App Store data we date.
