Do Brits really pay more than Americans for music?

Yes, on converted App Store prices. A UK individual music subscription at £12.99 works out to about $17.61 versus $12.99 in the US, and the second music app shows the same pattern (£11.99 ≈ $16.25 versus $11.99). Same companies, same plans, and the American price wins.

Will a VPN alone get me the foreign price?

No. Your billing country comes from your account and its payment method, not your IP address. A VPN changes what storefront you see, not which country's card that account will accept. That gate is why most people who try this end up back on their home price.

Two rows deserve a closer look:

Netflix is the purest case. The US is not just expensive — it is the single most expensive dated country for Standard in our entire file, ranked 41st out of 41. There is no “somewhere pays more” footnote here. India, the country everyone assumes is the cheap one, sits fourth at ₹499 / $5.21 — still a quarter of the US price.

The AI tiers barely move. Philippines pricing for the leading chatbot’s Plus tier is $16.16 against $19.99 stateside, a 24 percent gap — real money, but nothing like the video numbers. Claude Pro, Gemini AI Pro, and Perplexity Pro cluster even tighter: cheapest verified countries land within 13–15 percent of the US. These vendors price globally close to flat because their costs (compute) do not shrink in poorer markets. Why the US pays more

Willingness to pay. American households already spend $50–100 a month on streaming, so $19.99 clears without friction. In Lagos or Karachi, the same nominal price would be a luxury purchase, so the store prices in local income instead. It is price discrimination by market, not by person — and it cuts both ways, as the next section shows.

Where the US is NOT the peak

The pattern behind the exceptions: strong currencies plus VAT-inclusive pricing push European storefronts above the digit-identical US price once converted. The US is near the top of the world price range for consumer video and music — but it is a ceiling only for Netflix.

What you can actually do about it

Honest ranking of levers, best first:
