This used to be a page without a number. Not anymore. As of August 2026 we can point at both prices in two countries, and both point the same way: subscribing inside the YouTube iOS app costs more than subscribing at youtube.com, for the identical plan.
The reason has nothing to do with features. Apple takes a commission on subscriptions sold inside its apps. Google builds that commission into the in-app price instead of eating it. Same Google account, same downloads, same background play, different billing rail — and the expensive rail is the default on an iPhone.
The numbers, both sides of the checkout
In the United States, after the 2026 price hike, Individual Premium is $15.99 a month on the web versus $20.99 through Apple billing (reported by Android Authority and BGR when the change landed). That is five dollars a month, sixty dollars a year, for nothing extra. Family widens it: $26.99 web versus $34.99 Apple-billed, eight dollars a month.

India makes the pattern impossible to dismiss as rounding: ₹149 on the web against ₹289 in-app — nearly double. Why nobody tells you at the subscribe button
The app is built to complete a purchase, not to comparison-shop. For years Apple barred apps from even mentioning cheaper web sign-ups; court rulings have since loosened that, but the YouTube app still doesn’t volunteer that tapping “subscribe” inside it routes you to a higher number. Nothing obligates it to. The tell is on your receipt: Apple-billed subscriptions say Apple, not Google.
The switch, step by step
- Open a browser — Safari on the iPhone works fine — and go to youtube.com.
- Sign in with the Google account you actually watch on.
- Subscribe there. Read the amount on the payment sheet before confirming.
- Open the YouTube app. Premium arrives through the account, not the purchase channel.
Already paying through Apple? Cancel in iOS Settings > your name > Subscriptions, let the paid period run out, then resubscribe on the web. Do not run both at once; refunds across two vendors are slow. One trap: if you resubscribe from inside the iOS app instead of a browser, you land straight back on Apple billing and the higher price. That mistake turns the whole exercise into a round trip.
Family needs one payer on one rail. A Family plan billed to one Apple ID plus a web Individual on another household account is how families buy Premium twice. Confirm the plan name on the sheet, not just the price.
How to check which rail you are on
Three checks, fastest first:
- Your monthly amount. In the US, $20.99 means Apple billing; $15.99 means web.
- Your card statement. App Store charges bill under Apple’s name.
- iOS Settings > Subscriptions. If YouTube appears there, Apple is billing you.
On the web, YouTube > Purchases and memberships shows Google’s own billing — the sheet you want. Cancel Apple-billed plans from iOS Settings, not from inside the YouTube app alone.
What Spotify did instead
Spotify looked at the same commission and pulled in-app sign-up entirely. One checkout, one price, no decision to get wrong: is Spotify cheaper on iOS or web? Netflix did the same.
