Can I buy Spotify Premium in the iPhone app?

In the US, yes, as of the May 2025 app update: the app now shows prices and a link out to spotify.com where the purchase happens. In most other regions you still subscribe in a browser. Either way the price is the same web price.

What changed in 2025 — and what did not

Two legal shocks hit Apple’s wall, both traceable to Spotify:

March 2024: the European Commission fined Apple roughly $2 billion in the case Spotify filed in 2019, over rules that banned music apps from even telling users cheaper options existed outside the app.
April–May 2025: a US federal judge ordered Apple to stop blocking and taxing external purchase links. Within days, Apple approved a Spotify US app update (9.0.40, reported by CNBC on 2 May 2025) that shows pricing info and links out of the app.

What did not change: the price. The in-app link opens the same spotify.com checkout at the same list price. Spotify never re-introduced a marked-up Apple-billed tier, so there is still no iOS premium to avoid. Older articles telling you “you cannot subscribe from the iPhone app” are now half-stale in the US — the app shows you the door, but the door leads to the same web price.

What this means day to day

The iOS app is a player. Subscription, plan changes, and payment updates happen at spotify.com. If you have never seen a subscribe button inside the app, that is the design working as intended, not a bug.

Two consequences worth knowing:

You cannot manage Spotify billing from iOS Settings, unless you are on a legacy subscription that predates the change.
Cancelling is done on the Spotify account page on the web, not in the App Store.

Family, Duo, and Student plans all settle on Spotify’s site too, for new signups. If the payment sheet shows a currency you did not expect, stop. You are about to attach the wrong country, which is a region problem, not an iOS problem.

Spotify took the fight rather than the markup. It is the major music subscription where you cannot accidentally overpay by tapping the wrong button inside the app.

Legacy Apple billing is the exception

If Spotify appears under iOS Settings, subscriptions, you started paying before the pull-out, or Apple still recognises a restored purchase. That path can carry Apple’s commission baked into a historical price, and it confuses people who “already pay through Apple” into thinking they are stuck.

Cancel the Apple subscription first. Let the paid period end. Subscribe again at spotify.com. Do not run both at once — you will be billed twice until one period notices it should end. If Apple still lists Spotify after you subscribed on the web, you cancelled the wrong item or the period has not ended yet. Wait it out rather than adding a third payment method to “fix” it.

The lever that does move the price

Country, not channel. Spotify sets a different list price per market, and the account country plus a locally valid payment method determines the bill. One enforcement note before you try anything clever: Spotify’s September 2025 terms added a residency requirement, and signups are matched to a payment method from the same country.
