What the fee actually removes
Premium removes Google’s own advertising:
- Pre-roll and mid-roll video ads.
- Ads on Shorts.
- Audio ads inside YouTube Music.
It adds background playback, offline downloads, and picture-in-picture. Many people keep paying for those phone features more than for ad removal.
It does not remove sponsor reads baked into videos, shopping shelves, or the recommendation algorithm.
